High Speed Internet
The Town is looking into options for bringing high speed internet (up to 200 Mbps) to residents and business owners. During the May 19th public Council meeting, Mr. David Fell of EORN will discuss the possibility of doing a Request for Proposal to gauge investor interest in the area. At this time it is not known whether an investment from the Town would be needed to make the project viable. An information report on high speed internet and EORN is available here.
The aim of the project would be to provide much faster speeds and higher bandwidths than are currently available. Multiple packages would be available to suit different budgets at competitive market prices. Internet speed or bandwidth refers to the rate at which information travels. It can be visualized as a pipe. The larger the pipe, the more information can pass through at once.
EORN provides a guide:
|1.5 to 5 Mbps||Web browsing, file sharing, online banking, Skype, streaming music|
|5 to 10 Mbps||Large file sharing (ex. AutoCAD), video conferencing, Netflix and other video streaming, online gaming|
|10 to 50 Mbps||remote training, high quality video, HD surveillance, complex multiplayer online games, remote operation of medical and scientific instruments|
