Important notes regarding waste collection

Please ensure your waste is out at the curb no later than 7:00 AM.

1. Tim Horton's cups and pizza boxes will not be accepted as recycling, please put these items in your garbage.

2. Plastic bags are NOT accepted in recycling stream, this includes a “bag of bags”, shopping bags, cookie/cracker bags, pasta noodle bags, any plastic type bag (these are only some examples not the full list). The only exception to this is shredded paper in a clear plastic bag.

The reason for this is that these bags are no longer recycled. They have been stockpiled and taken to the landfill by the recycle collection depot. The majority of the municipalities in our area have already implemented this measure and recently the recycling from Deep River has been considered contaminated due to the number of bags. Unfortunately, the volatility of the recycling industry no longer provides for a business case to recycle these bags. We ask that you please do your part by using re-usable bags wherever possible to reduce the negative impacts, both environmental and financial that plastic bags cost.

3. Recycling will alternate pickup one week fibers (cardboard, paper) and the other week containers (plastic and glass).

4. Please ensure all items are placed out no later then 7:00 am on your scheduled pick up day.

5. Ensure your waste meets size and weight requirements (Maximum of 50 LBS - container size maximum of 83 L).

6. Stryrofoam is NOT recyclable.

Tips for Recycling

Fiber Recycling (Cardboard, paper, newspaper ect.):

Flatten and tie in bundles no larger than 2’x2’x8" (60cm x 60cm x 20cm), place beside the Blue Box.

Boxboard: Flatten and ensure it is clean and void of food products. Please do not include plastic or wax paper liners, plastic handles, straws or metal trim. Place inside or beside the Blue Box. If mixed with cardboard will not be picked up.

Containers (glass jars, plastic ect.):

All containers and lids should be clean. Please remove lids and place both items loose inside the Blue Box.

Plastic Bottles: Plastic bottles typically include pop bottles, squeezable ketchup, jam, syrup, salad dressing and barbecue sauce bottles. They will have one of the following symbols on the bottom : 1, 2, 3, 5 and 7.

      Residential Bag Limit

Beginning May 1, 2017, the Town of Deep River introduced a two (2) bag limit for residential household waste collection. Businesses are exempt from these bag limits. The purpose of this bag limit is to encourage all residents to recycle. Increased diversion of waste will increase the life of local landfills and reduce waste management costs for residents.

Definition of Two (2) Bags

Two bags are defined as two individual garbage bags or two waste containers that hold a maximum combined volume of 154 litres of household waste. (A standard garbage bag    measuring 26”x32” equals 77 litres.)

What if I have more than “two bags”?

You can purchase bag tags and attach them to all bags in excess of the two (2) bag limit. Bag tags can be purchased Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm at Town Hall for $2.00 per bag tag. Revenues from the sale of bag tags will be allocated to the future  closing costs of the Baggs Road Landfill Site.

Can I take extra bags to the Baggs Road Landfill Site?

Yes. However, all residents of Deep River will be required to pay $2.00 per bag or the bag must have a bag tag attached to it to dispose of waste at the Bagg’s Landfill Site.

What should I do if I have questions?

Staff will work closely with the collection contractor to facilitate a smooth transition to ensure compliance with the bag limits. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Public Works Department at (613) 584-2000.

When will my recycling and waste be collected?

The collection schedule will not change. Please see the waste and recycling collection calendar (link above)
